I am upgrading a pc from Windows XP Home to Windows XP Pro. The setup
begins the process of "Installing Devices", at which point setup is at 34%,
throws an error message (which flashes to quickly for me to read) and
reboots. This happens each time creating an infinite loop from which I am
unable to break out of.

Please help me to overcome this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Mervin Williams

why not do a clean install?

Have you tried posting your problems
not related to MS AntiSpyware to
news://msnews.microsoft.com

and please don't bother to send me private mail
because I don't check my mailbox regularly

It would help if you indicate if your upgrade is a full version or an upgrade version. If an upgrade version, you can do a clean install. It will wipe out whatever is in C:\Windows (default).

When upgrading, the only devices you need connected are screen, keyboard and
mouse.. disconnect everything else..

Since you say "It will wipe out whatever is in C:\Windows," I
suspect that you meant to say "If an upgrade version, you can
**not** do a clean install."

However, that is *not* correct. The requirement to use an upgrade
version is to *own* a previous qualifying version's installation
CD (with an OEM restore CD, see below), not to have it installed.
When setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version installed,
it will prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just
insert the previous version's CD, and follow the prompts.
Everything proceeds quite normally and quite legitimately.

You can also do a clean installation if you have an OEM restore
CD of a previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but
it *can* be done. First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the
XP upgrade CD from within that restored system, and change from
Upgrade to New Install. When it asks where, press Esc to delete
the partition and start over.
