Every time I open a Word document, the Help screen also opens. I would like
for Help to open only when I specify it. Can this be done?

You don't mention the Word version and system you are using.
In 2003, when you open the application the Startup Task Pane (which has the
Help task pane option) opening is controlled by Tools, Options, View tab,
check/uncheck "Startup Task Pane".
If as you say this opens everytime you open every document, please come back
with the Word version, etc, and we maybe able to help further.
Hope this helps

Are you on XP or Vista, etc.
Click on Properties (right-mouse click) of the My Computer desktop icon.
Anyway, is the Help task pane opening for every document, or just when you
start the application?
Did you uncheck as described below, did this help?

hmm, I was hoping that would be that.
Try the unchecking (if checked that is) the two WordPerfect boes on the
General tab (under Tools, Options). These two tend to affect Word 2003 in odd
ways and maybe this is another one for the list.
Cross-fingers.

Press F1 to open the Help task pane. Click the last item in that pane,
"Online Content Settings," and clear the check box for "Show Template Help
automatically when available."
