Hi, Henry.
For some reason, I can't post a question, so I'm asking for help this way.
You're using the Web-based interface to the Microsoft Discussion Groups. To
post a question, click the New button, rather than the Reply button. As you
seem to know, it's a breach of Netiquette to "hijack" an existing thread to
change the subject. Also, your problem does not fit this Subject at all, so
the people who could help with your problem are not likely to even see it.

I'm trying to use 8 cd's from hp for recovery.
WinXP comes on a single CD-ROM, not EIGHT of them!
It sounds like you need to go to
www.hp.com and find their Tech Support page
and ask your question there. Your problem seems to be in the HP-proprietary
part of their OEM version of WinXP.
IF you have a full WinXP CD-ROM, you should be able to boot from it and let
it install WinXP for you, including repartitioning and reformatting your
HDD, if you choose. If HP furnished you with less than a full WinXP CD,
then you will need to discuss this with HP or the dealer who sold it to you.
