I've been a long time Apple user, but this Christmas my wife and kids
conspired to get me to "be compatable with the rest of the real world"
and got me a new Dell running Windows XP SP2. So here I am looking
for some help. If I need to go pound salt please be gentle.

I'm using Outlook for email and could use some help with the address
book. At the office I use Pine for all my email on a Linux box. It
only takes a few editor commands to change pines address book to a
*.csv file.

1) How can I set up two address books in Outlook? One for my
"personal" address and one for my "office" email.

2) How can I import the csv converted address book into each of the
Outlook address books (one personal, one office)?

3) I know this is an Outlook group, but are there other email programs
I can experiment with (besides OE, Eudora, Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird).

4) What software is available to read news groups beside OE? As you
can see from the headers here, I'm using slrn on a NetBSD system.

Any help would surely be appreciated.
I have a lot of Windows to learn !

Welcome to Gatesville, population, plus 1. ;-)

My laptop is an iBook. I love it.

Can't help you with all the questions, but here's a start.

#1. Not really sure. Maybe you could use the Catagories and create a custom
view specifying one category or the other.

#2: To import a CSV, select File>Import and Export. In the resulting dialog
box, select "import from another program file" and select next. Select Comma
Separated Value (DOS). I really don't know if that would work, but it's the
closes I see. There is also a Comma Separated Value (WIN). Browse your way
to your file, and see if it works.

#3: As a Mac user, you should be familiar with www.versiontracker.com . Try
the windows portion of their site, and do a search for "email client."

#4: Same thing, only search for "news client." I've tried just about all of
them. I'd also check out Windows newsreaders,
http://www.newsreaders.com/win/clients.html for a pretty comprehensive list.

Good luck, and remember, Outlook is not Entourage, unfortunately.

You could check out Thunderbird as an email client and newsreader. The
import/export features are good and - in my opinion - the news and email
functions, too, are the best in the business.

Hope this helps.

First, it always helps when you state your version of Outlook.
1) How can I set up two address books in Outlook? One for my
"personal" address and one for my "office" email.

Outlook does not actually have an "Address Book". Outlook's address book is
actually just a view of your Contacts folder. All manipulation of your
Contacts items should be done via the Contacts folder. That said, there are
several ways. You can have multiple Contacts folders and make each an
address book. Alternatively, you can keep them all in one Contacts folder
and assign them categories and then display your Contacts folder by
category. I'm sure others can suggest more alternatives.
2) How can I import the csv converted address book into each of the
Outlook address books (one personal, one office)?

File>Import and Export is the way to handle an existing csv. The wizard
should let you define a mapping from the fields you have to the equivalent
Outlook fields.
3) I know this is an Outlook group, but are there other email programs
I can experiment with (besides OE, Eudora,
Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird).

There's a slew of free and commercial mail programs for Windows PCs.
However, Outlook is more than just an email program.
4) What software is available to read news groups beside OE? As you
can see from the headers here, I'm using slrn on a NetBSD system.

Forte Agent and Xnews are two good, free newsreaders. There are a slew of
others, as well, again both free and commercial. Check out the
alt.comp.freeware newsgroup.
