Help Please

Hi every body,
Today, my friend could not start his windows xp pro SP2.
There is an error message stating:
windows can not locate
\WINDOWS\System32\Config\SYSTEM,
just like that, the screen froze with this message on.
Please help. how can I repair this?

Lets try this to see if it will work before doing something more serious.
Enter the BIOS and reset the Defaults, then shutdown and wait a couple of
min. then try to start it again.
If it starts then as soon as it gets booted do a System File Check.
Start>Run>(type) sfc /scannow (press enter) have your XP CD handy
If this won't run furnish more info on the setup.

Then run a Disk Defrag.
Start>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defrag.
Then run a Disk Check
My Computer>Right click C Drive>Properties>Tools tab>Check Now>Select Yes to
check after Shutdown
