Help please with auto shutdown

I'm trying to fix a problem with Windows XP based PC. I can not get into
Windows, possibly because of the Sasser virus affecting lsass.exe. I have a
copy of Windows XP Home and Professional to use and neither of them will
work.

When booting up with the cd's in the cd-rom drive, after loading all the
files and getting the message "Setup is starting Windows" I get to the Enter
to Install / R for Repair option screen. No matter what I push the computer
immediately shuts down. I've tried every kind of boot disk but none of them
help. I've tried both the XP home and professional disks and they both do
the same thing. At this point I don't give a crap about saving data/drivers,
I just want to be able to fdisk/format and reinstall. I've tried every kind
of boot disk I can find and none of them work. I'm not sure what I need
exactly to access an NTFS partition.

Please, please, please someone help me if it's possible. I'm getting very
stressed and can't take this any more.

Thanks for any help provided,
Chris

Hi Chris,

Two things to try:

1) Instead of going to the installer, hit "r" at the first prompt to enter
the Recoveyr Console. From the command prompt, run "chkdsk C: /r" and see if
it helps.

2) After getting past the license screen, where you select the installation
to repair, instead try deleting and recreating the system partition.

If either or both of these fail, you could very well have a corrupt hard
drive, in which case I would recommend that you download a drive diagnostic
utility from the drive manufacturer and check the state of the drive.

I tried your solution and that does the same thing. As soon as I hit R, the
computer just immediately shuts down. I think it has to do with the missing
lsass.exe file but since I can't access the hard drive to fix it, I'm stuck.

Any suggestions on what to do if the hard drive check comes out ok?

Chris
