i have a problem with my xp! it suddenly freezs and writing appears on bright blue background and then the computer shuts down with no warning, and it is not the old 60 sec virus. After shutting down, the computer turns itself back on again and a message appears - stating that windows has failed to load up correctly and then gives me options on whether i want to turn windows on in safe mode or from the last known good conifguration. On the same screen there is a countdown timer which starts at 30 and this counts down the time until windows starts. HOwever before the timer reaches 0 the computer shuts itself down again and restarts - and the same thing happens over n over again until around 15 mintues has passed and then the computer will load up correctly! please help i have no idea what this is and have run virus checks and have all the windows updates needed!

You might want to start with Event Viewer. You can access it in Safe
Mode thru Administative Tools on the Control Panel. Look at events
under system and application. If you double-click on an event in the
right-hand pane, a window with detailed information and an error code
will come up. It's a good place to start.

Also, you can prevent the computer from automatically restarting when
there is an error. This will enable you to write down whatever is on
the Blue Screen of Death (yes, the BSoD) and tell us what error you are
having. Most often, you just need to update or reinstall a driver. It
may be nothing serious at all.

Here's how to disable the auto-restart.

Go into Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, then System.
In the applet that appears, click the Advanced tab.
Click the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery section.
Clear the Automatically Restart checkbox in the System failure section.
Click OK.

Restart normally. Write down the error on the blue screen and let us know.
