Hello,

I receive the above system messages when I start xp pro.
I read http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330184
where it says "Start from the Windows XP CD, start the Recovery
Console".

Problem is I bought my laptop used and it didn't come with a CD, so I
cannot run the Recovery Console. Question : my parents have xp home on
their PC - can I run their CD? If not, is it more efficient to jump
off a bridge head first or feet first?

Yes you can, assuming it's an actual windows xp cd and not one of those
"recovery cds" many computer companies give out. Even if it is, still try it.
if you just need a console to move a few files around (or manually rewrite
the boot.ini file based on an example), you could likely use any boot disk
(that supports ntfs, windows 2000/xp or later) or a bootable cd. both can be
found on google fairly easily, lots of options.

Whoops. Hope you got a *very good* price on that purchase. It seems
that you may have been stuck with a pirated copy of XP. All
legitimate XP installations include a CD or have a "Recovery
Partition" on the hard drive.

You can also download the multi-diskette boot images from Microsoft
and use these diskettes to boot the computer. At the end of the boot
process you will be in Recovery Console

Good luck
