Dave

Hope you can help. I don't really want to ask on the Symantec forums because
you can't post messages unless you register with the website - and I really
hate that and don't see why I should have to register on a website.
Anyway.....

My wife's family live all over the country and they are forever ringing me
as their own personal helpdesk guy - not that I know a lot, it's just that I
seem to know a bit more than they do :o)

Anyway, they recently clubbed together and bought me the latest version
(v12.0) of Symantec's PC Anywhere so that I can help them even more - deep
joy :o)

Now, I'm no dummy but I've gotta say I'm confused by it all. It's probably
*way* overkill for what we need but as long as we can get it working it'll
keep the family happy. I assume that there's a part that I have to install
on my machine and a part to be installed on the remote machines so that I
can get access to them but that only makes two parts - looking on this CD
there's way more than that.

There's a "Gateway" which, apparently, helps to connect to machines behind
router NATs and firewalls. Fair enough, but is that to be installed on my
machine, on the remotes, or on both?

All together there seems to be about 10 different programs available to me
on this CD and there's a folder called "Packages" with both "Windows
Installer Package (.msi files)" and "Solution Package Installer (.exe
files)" versions of (a) AutoStart Host (b) Full Product (c) Host Only (d)
Network Host Only and (e) Remote Only.

I'm assuming that as I'm the "helpdesk", the "Full Product" should be
installed on my machine and that I email the "Remote Only" part out to the
family for them to install on their machines?

According to a review I saw recently, Symantec have "gone back to basics"
with this version making it easier to use - if that's the case, I'd hate to
see an earlier version :o) The pdf manual doesn't say which thing is
supposed to be installed where :o(

Thanks,

Dave.

You are the Remote.
They are the host(s). They EACH need a legal Host package to meet the
terms of the EULA. If you have not installed your package, you can
legally install ONE Host Only from that package on ONE of their
machines and Install the REMOTE only on yours.

PCAW is simple to use to move/replace files from your system to
theirs.

For just pure remote control, I use TightVNC (free) over broadband.

Oh dear, I just knew it was going to be a nightmare

Thanks for your help Steve - I might just give TightVNC a look :o)

UltraVNC with Router setup (if needed) to forwarded outside port requests to
the proper machine(s) and the proper "holes" open in any software firewalls
you have and you can have remote control, security, remote file transfer,
chat, etc - without paying a dime to anyone.

Combine that with a free dynamic DNS service and you don't even have to
remember more than a simple web address to get to home from anywhere - no
matter how often your IP address (public IP address) may change.

Ah, that's brilliant Shenan, thanks very much.

Also look at the UltraVNC Single-Click add-on...

"UltraVNC SC is a mini (166k) UltraVNC Server that can be customized and
preconfigured for download by a Customer. UltraVNC SC does not require
installation and does not make use of the registry. The customer only have
to download the little executable and Click to make a connection. The
connection is initiated by the server, to allow easy access thru customers
firewall."

Al, when I follow that link there's no way to download the SC addon - not
that I can see anyway. As I scroll down the page, there's a link to
"custom.zip" for if you want to create your own (ha, like I could) and, in
the top right of the page there's two links to download either a "stable"
version or a develop version.

None of these are correct as it states that the SC addon is about 166k and
neither of the downloads are that small (about 2.5Mb). I'm not a
particularly thick person but I'm finding this is akin to wading through
treacle. I don't suppose you've got a copy you could email to me at
herbieadsl AT btinternet DOT com have you, please?

Cheers

Dave

You have to follow through the directions..

"How to create my own version?"

It looks like you have to roll your own version. A real basic version is
created by downloading the custom.zip file (its less than 3K in size),
extract the contents to a temporary folder and modifying the helpdesk.txt
file. Once you do that save the modified helpdesk.txt file to a compressed
file, ie. a .zip file, then run the online creation program at...

Beyond that there are UltraVNC help forums that may provide a better answer
since I have not gotten past the above stage...

Unfortunately I'm not in a good position to test further for the next 10 to
14 days... Sorry I can't be of further help...But it does look promising...

One added comment...

I suggest strongly that you use the encryption plug-in since your planning
on using this across the public internet...

By the way, the first forum link is a How-To and seems very good from a
quick glance...

Good luck...
