I purchased a windows XP system online about a year ago
and recently the hard drive crashed wiping out all data
and the OS. The good news is they sent the original xp
disc. the bad news is they didnt send the product key and
the really bad news is the company I bought the system
from is apparently belly-up. Any advice on how to obtain
the original product key would be greatly appreciated.

The really, really bad news is you're plain out of luck!
You'll need to go out and purchase a new copy of XP.
Microsoft cannot offer assistance with OEM versions of XP.

Normally an online purchase "system" will have an "OEM" version, that said,
the "system" should have a sticker stuck to the top, side, back or bottom
with the CD-Key on it.

Maybe the company you bought it for went out of business because they were
pirating copies of XP. But either on the system, in the system you should
have a key. Many OEM's stuck the key on a label on the outside of the
system. Because if its not on the packaging that your nice holographic
labeled looking XP disk came in. Your probably stuck buying a new one. Or
you don't have the nice holographic looking XP disk that says genuine
Microsoft, you have a pirate copy and are stuck buying a new copy of XP.
