Help! My computer shuts down in the middle of a program.

When I'm half way through doing something my computer takes it upon its self
to shut down, it usually happens when I'm playing a game or burning a DVD.
When I turn it back on it starts up like it should, but it doesn't tell me
that it wasn't shut down properly.
My computer is only a year old, I didn't think I'd have problems with it
just yet.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?

The age of the computer is irrelevant in this case. In fact, if hardware
is going to fail it will usually do so pretty quickly or go for years.
Some hardware component is failing, possibly a fan (and the computer is
overheating), possibly the power supply. Here are some general hardware
troubleshooting steps:

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts
with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA).

Have you tried Defragmenting your computer? Press Start, all programs,
accessories, system tools, disc defragmenter.

Defragging the hard drive will not help the OP with his/her hardware
problem. In fact, doing a defrag on a machine that is likely to shut
down during the process could put the operating system into an unknown
state. Not recommended.

I'll take the lid off and make sure there's no dust inside slowing the fan
down, hopefully this might help. If not it can go back to the shop! Thanks
for your input. I'll check out your web site info too.
