I have set defender to automatically scan my computer, but it never does.
Does the program have to be running, or do I need to use a scheduler to
launch the program before the scheduled start time? I can't imagine running
it all the time unless I can minimize to my tray, but I don't see this
option. What am I missing?

Defender should run in the background without you noticing. I have scheduled
mine to run at 7pm each day and, as far as i am aware, it does. If i'm not
using my pc at 7pm then it cannot run, in which case the next time i log on
the defender icon will pop up itne notification area and, if i click on it,
it will tell me that i haven't scanned my pc for 1 day or several days
depedning upon on often i have used the pc.

To schedule all you need do is launch defender, click the Tools followed by
options. in the options window select frequency: daily, Approximate time:
What tiem you want the sacns tto starts and finalyy the type of scan, -quick
or full. Finally click the Save button and that should be it.

I would have expected what John to be true - but in my case when I open
Defender from the icon I get the following (Note UK format for date
dd/mm/yyyy)
Status
Last Scan: 26/02/2008 at 14:01, (Quick scan).
Scan schedule: Daily around 02:00.
Real time protection: On
Definition version: 1.27.7082.0 created os 25/02/2008 at 20:22.

Today is 01/03/2008 and no scan has been run since 26/02/2008 - I have to
manual initiate the scan
I am running Vista on an HP laptop.

Any ideas please?

Many thanks - but why do I have to go through this rigmarole form such a
fundamental product when other products seem to be able to start
automatically when I wakeup the computer. Surely WD should start the scan
then.
Thanks - I will update this if it fails to do the scan at 02:00

Mr. Milns,

I have my Windows Defender set to start automatically and do a full
scan at 7:00 P.M. every day. If my computer is off at that particular time
the scan starts as soon as I am logged in. The Windows Defender interface is
shown and it runs without any input from me.
I don't have a solution for you. Maybe someone else can solve it.
