I don't know what's wront with my computer, but I can't
get my internet explorer to open up. but that's not all
of it, whenever I try to open up my control panel, or my
comptuer, or any folder for that matter, and the
recycling bin my bottom start bar dissapears as well as
any icons on my desktop, it reapears a few seconds later
but with only the start button and the time in the right
corner, none of my icons that live on the bar are
there!!! I cant open up any of my past essays either :(
I've scanned my computer about 4 times for viruses, and
it's come up with nothing!! can anyone help me please???

It seems to be quite a common problem at the moment.
Lots of people (including myself!) reporting the same
problem but as yet no one has managed to find a solution!

If you have scanned your computer with a current (post-2002 version
using updated definitions) antivirus and also removed spyware and
you're still having problems, try going to Start>Run and typing "sfc
scannow". Please note there is a space between "sfc" and "/scannow".
You should have your XP cd in the drive first. If the System File
Checker doesn't fix the problem, then perhaps it is time to do some
hardware diagnosis. Post back after running the System File Checker if
you need more help.

Try Start - Run - "explorer" and see if that makes your desktop come back. Or
Alt-Ctrl-Dlt - Task Manager - File - Run - "explorer".

As far as the cause of the problem, try looking a bit further for malware.
Which virus scans have you tried? Here's a couple on-line scans:
<http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp>
<http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp>

First, try McAfee Stinger (free)
<http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe>.

Then, download LSP-Fix from <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, and CWShredder
from <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>. Both free.

Next, run CWShredder. Have it fix all variants.

Now check for, and remove, spyware. Get HijackThis
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155> and Spybot S&D
<http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download>. Both free.
1) Install and run Spybot. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a
scan ("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and make all recommended deletions.
2) Install and run HijackThis. Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
3) Have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the following
forums (and post it here):
<http://forums.net-integration.net/>
<http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/>
<http://forums.tomcoyote.org/>
<http://www.wilderssecurity.com/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix.

And please learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit
safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - never post your address unmunged.

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

It occurred to me that you maybe in the situation that you can't access the net, with your own computer, so just incase you are frantically writing via a pals machine

Firstly, ask your friend if they have a CD-Recorder (i.e can they copy programs on to CD) if so, there might be an option on the above mentioned sites to download a copy of your preferred spyware/virus remover on to your friends computer

(normally this is done by right clicking on the download link & the computer asks to open file or save - you need to save it to the hard drive in the downloads folder).

Then you can copy this program to CD & use it in your own computer. (most companies allow one back-up copy of software, incase of computer failure, you'd just be utilizing the back-up copy first

Also the Windows Repair CD - It maybe able to repair your windows errors with out wiping out your documents, but I'd back up your important Documents as soon as possible, incase it needs the full works!!!

still does the same thing. Ive downloaded and installed my
graphics driver and that didnt help.

any suggestons would help since Im about ready to trash my
computer

Hi Spa,

I got my to work finally. reboot in Safe-Mode with
networking and download Ad-aware 6 from
www.lavasoftusa.com. Run this and remove any entries
found. I also ran spybot with the latest updates,
downloaded from www.security.kolla.de, several times just
to make sure. Next, I shutdown and powered off my PC.
Rebooted in normal mode and then was able to open
Explorer, My Computer, My Network Neighborhood and IE,
without any messages in the Event Logs.

Regards,
Kim
