enhance their knowledge on new technologies associated with Windows XP
Service Pack 2. Compatibility issues with laptops will be acquired throughout
the research process as well. Students will be asked to present their
findings.

This workshop will be for those less IT-savvy ppl...

Looks like a good outline to me, but that would be more than a workshop to
be fully covered. More like a full semester. A primary focus should be made
on system security, as a lack of it is the number one cause of user issues.
Not just viruses, but spy/ad software as well. Teach them to control the
urge to click willy-nilly on everything that comes up on the screen.

Thanks Rick,
Can you like elaborate on the system security part? My topics for
that aren't enough?

Hope to hear your reply

You should include an hour about how to block senders of e-mail spams, etc.
in Outlook Express. Not just clicking the "block sender" click for one
e-mail adress but the entire range of potential source that the spammer is
using . Get the range of the IP address and domain names using the
International Whois file access system from NIC. Many of this stuff comes
from off-continent, Poland ,China, Spain, Korea, etc. Eg. 222.*.*.* will
block one of the kr nodes. Go to "tools" and click "block senders list" and
add the offending range.

Perhaps add "Phishing and Identity theft"

Lock down the system:

- stressing the use of firewalls and av software, and keeping same up to
date
- always install critical updates (doesn't hurt to subscribe to a security
bulletin like cert either)
- do not allow all users to run on admin accounts
- teach users not to open attachments w/o verifying that they were sent
intentionally
- teach them to ignore tempting offers and delete without reading
unsolicited email
- teach them to getting used to either frequently changing email addresses
or learning to setup filters, especially if they just hand it out to anyone
or any site that wants it for registration
- freeware often isn't, usually it's a package deal
- just because it's cute doesn't mean it's friendly
- you can't win a lottery that you didn't enter

Most of all, learn about the system. How it runs, how to control what is
running. Understanding of the basic mechanics is often enough for many to
figure out on their own how to avoid trouble in the first place.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for your comments...however, they are not using Outlook
Express.. The polytechnic is damn clever to tell them to use an Internet
based Lotus Notes client....
