Tommy

I just recieved my new computer. Both the new one and the
2-year old one have Windows XP. I'm connecting through
the internet using a Linksys Wireless -B Broadband
Router. No problems there and I even use AOL for both
computer. The problem is: I've done the tutorial found
in "network connections" from the control panel. The
tutorial is called "Setup a small home or office
network". It created a network called "MSHome". I can see
this from both computers, but can't get in it. I can't
map a drive to it. I can't do ANYTHING that results in
one computer being able to see the files of the other
computer. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Tommy,

Asked here, answered here. For everybody's benefit.

What version of XP (Home, Pro) is each computer?

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer.
Start - Run - "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in
Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Do you have any software firewalls (ICF or third party) on any computer?

Are you running both Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing
for Microsoft Networks (Local Area Connection - Properties), on both computers?
Do you have shares setup on both?

Are you running NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (Local Area Connection - Properties - TCP/IP
- Properties - Advanced - WINS) on both computers?

Make sure the browser service is running. Control Panel - Administrative Tools
- Services. Verify that the Computer Browser service is started.

On XP Pro, check to see if Simple File Sharing (Control Panel - Folder Options -
View - Advanced settings) is enabled or disabled. With XP Pro, you need to have
the SFS settings the same on each computer.

If SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look at
"Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set to "Classic -
local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers.
If "Classic", setup and use a common account with identical, non-blank, password
on all computers.

Configure the firewalls to allow file and printer sharing by opening the
following ports: TCP 139, 445; UDP 137, 138, 445.

From each computer:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / failure of each of 12 pings.

And Tommy, please don't contribute to the spread of email address mining
viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit
safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - never post your address unmunged.
