HELP IE keeps hanging up every 20 seconds

IE keeps hanging up every 20 seconds or so for a period of about 5-10 seconds at a time. I have not noticed any other programs hanging up on my computer just my internet connection (Internet Explorer 6) I can't minimize, maximize, close do any thing while its is "Frozen" It it extremly eggravating PLEASE HELP!!
