I have afolder on my desktop that I cannot delete because it gives me a
message that the path is too long. I have no idea how I made it, but if you
open it, it just has another folder inside, and on and on and on.. it never
stops. Noone can seem to tell me how to get rid of it. I tried deleteing it
in safe mode with no luck. Any ideas anyone?

R.click the desktop,properties,display,customize desktop,web,run the desktop
cleanup wizard.

Hi,

Try this small program on your problem file.

http://www.softwarepatch.com/software/moveonboot.html

Description
MoveOnBoot allows you to Move, Copy or Delete files before Windows can
lock or alter the files. The changes are made to your hard drive before
Windows starts (it requires a restart of your system after you give
MoveOnBoot its instructions). There are no messy boot or DOS commands,
just a simple 3-step process.

Darn it! I thought this would work, but it had no effect, the folder still
sits there. I think the problem with using that program is it would delete a
file, but i can't get to whatever file is in there to tell it to delete it
because the path is just too long.
:(

Hi again,

Is there any chance you can set the program to delete the whole folder?
How about using the program and deleting a newly created folder that you
put the offending file in? There must be some way to isolate that file
so you can delete the folder it's in, or using the * and blowing away
all the files located somewhere of your choosing.

Know any old timers that can show you how to delete files from a CMD
prompt? I think you can use a *.* sort of thing to delete all files
located somewhere regardless of naming conventions.

Hi,

In case you don't get better advice (twas along time ago), when you have a
CMD prompt, select the Drive you want using the Drive letter followed by a
colon (:) e.g. C: and press Enter.
When the Drive is located, type "Del" a space and the foldername and
press Enter.
If you wish to delete something specific in the folder, add
that after a backslash eg " Del Pictures\print folder" should just delete
the print folder, not everything in Pictures
Be very, very careful, because the Del command acts instantly and
comprehensively.
There is an UnDel command, but my memory is fading badly on that one.
If you get a "Bad Command or file name" response, check that you haven't
used a semi-colon, or left out a space.

Good luck,

Jim.

Gave that a go.. it acted like it worked okay, i mean, it didn't give me an
error or say it couldn't delete it, but the folder is still there.

Hi again,

.......I have no idea how I made it, but if you open it, it just has

Can you open the last folder in the chain of folders? If so, can you
change its name to a single letter? If so, can you do the single letter
name change all the way up the chain?

I'm wondering what you would find if you put the drive in another
computer as a slave and had a run at it.

I can change the name of the folders, yes, and in windows explorer it will
only let me view a chain of so many folders, like 18 i think. But i can move
some of those folders to the root folder and then delete those, but in the
main chain more folders will just appear. so, as far as i can tell, there is
no end or last folder..

Damn!

Do you know how to make new users? I'm wondering what would happen if
you made a new user and dragged all your desktop items from your old
desktop to your new one then deleted the old user. Do you think that big
file folder chain would prevent you from deleting a whole user account?

Except for placing the drive in a different computer as a slave and
trying a few things, I'm out of guesses.
