I am receiving an error message when I try to view my deleted items folder
that states "The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the
problem persists, please restart outlook". Then I try to empty my delete
items folder and it will not allow me and I receive the same error message
again.

how many things are in the folder?

There are 527 emails. I know that I should have been deleting these, and I
will very often in the future, but how do I go forward at this point???

Can you tell how I can delete these emails now?

ok... that is well under the max, so it's not because you have too many
items. (I generally have 4000 or so before I delete them. :))

Try this: close outlook. at the start menu, run command, type
outlook.exe /safe

see if you can delete the items now. if that fails, turn off the preview
pane (View menu) and try.
