hello, i just started up my desktop computer, running xp home and ie 6. i can
pull up my initial internet home page but clicking on anything further than
that, i get a microsoft error message that IE needs to close. i can't scan my
computer with norton antivirus and i can't go to help and support to try a
system restore. any program i try to use i get an error that it needs to
close. i can only get to my yahoo home page and anything the site shuts down.
any ideas here...how can i fix this. thanks in advance

Why can't you scan with NAV? What happens when you try?

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus Ewido. Do all
prep/finishing work and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe
Mode.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

You will need to get the tools/updates from a different, known-clean
computer which has a cd burner (or have a usb thumbdrive with enough
capacity to transfer the tools/updates). If you don't have the ability
to do this and/or the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA).

Have you tried Trend Micro's free online virus scan?

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Also, there's some excellent maintenance advice at

http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

Chances are you have malware and/or too many temp files. Follow the
instructions; maintenance makes a big difference!

You say you can load your "initial internet home page," but I wonder if
what's loading is only what is in your cache. Are you able to access the
Internet other ways (e-mail, IRC, ping?)?

Finally, what have you done prior to this problem that may have set it
off?

Then I would definitely go through the virus/malware scans described at
the links I previously gave you. I don't recommend online scanners
because it is best to do all scans in Safe Mode.

You will probably have to uninstall Norton, clean it up entirely, and
reinstall it (assuming you want Norton - not recommended).
