OK, so I had a problem that required me to start from
scratch. I use Windows XP Professional, so I backed-up
my harddrive using Backup, re-formatted, re-installed
Windows, restored most of my files. Then, I discovered
that I couldn't access the files that had been encrypted
before all this. Of course! So here is my question: how
do I access the private key from my old user account
(which should be among the backed-up data), so that I can
access my files again? If you have a thought, solution,
or even a question, please email me.

Hi

The easiest way would to be restoring the computer completely back to
what you had before the reinstall(using your backup).

If that is not an option:

As you have access to the user profile folders for the user that
encrypted the files and if you remember the password for the user
that encrypted the data, you might be able to save the files.

Take a look at this site for more details:

Alright, thanks.

Due to the peculiar circumstances of my problem, I can't
completely restore my computer to its former state.

Also because of these problems, I'm having some trouble
using the methods on the web site you specified.
However, I do expect to resolve the problem, in time.

Thank you for the help.
