I have a Dell Demension and have been trying to get it to connect to a home netowork. When I connect directly to the Router or to the Cable Modem I can connect to the Internt. But as soon as I connect to a hub or switch I cannot get a good IP address and the xp Machine will not see the router
I have tried both a linksys and a Belkin Router.

Some ISP look for the MAC address of the cable modem and the MAC address of
the connection behind it. Suggest using the cloning feature in your router
to clone the MAC address of your network to the WAN port on your router.

If you don't have/use uplink ports then you need the crossover cable between
hub and router;

John,

If you're having problems connecting to the router thru a hub or
switch, you need to check the cabling - both PC to hub / switch, and
hub / switch to router. Get the cable type right. Connecting PC to
router, you use a straight thru cable. Connecting a PC to the hub /
switch, likewise. RTFM about how to connect the hub / switch to the
router - might be a straight thru, might be a crossover - might have a
switch on the hub too - try both if unsure.

if more questions, please identify make and model number of routers
and hub / switch.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I hear you but niether my hub or switch require a cross-over cable. The XP Machine is replacing a 98SE machine that was working great on the same line. i am also running a Mac thru the same switch with no problem.

My Switch is a Linksys EZSX55W, Router that the XP Machine will connect to less the Switch is a Linksys BEFSR11 (1 port) Also a Belkin 4 Port Gateway Router F5D5231-4, Which the XP Machine will not connect to hub/swtch or not
Thanks for your hel
John
