I am a neophite to all of this, so this may seem like a
dumb question.

I have downloaded some video in AVI format, and I would
like to burn it to a DVD so that parnets can watch it on a
TV. Can someone tell me:

1. Can I do this with WIndows Media Palyer 9?
2. If not, what do I need to be able to do this?

Many thanks!

Use the freeware version of TMPGEnc to convert the avi to mpeg2:
http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html then use your burning software (I use
Nero) to burn the DVD. The free version of TMPGEnc only converts to mpeg2
for 30 days as I recall, but since there is no install required (put it in a
folder and launch it) you can always download it again in the future.
TMPGEnc allows you to retain the aspect ratio of widescreen movies, if
that's the format of the avi file in question. I followed this guide:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tmpgencdvd.htm and it worked like a charm. Lots of
helpful tutorials can be found on that site.

Regards,
Ian.
