Ok...
The situation is this; Last week one of our employees quit under
stressful situations. He, feeling unappreciated, decided to change the
administrator password to the computers as well as remove some important
programs. It is my job to try to figure a way to either retrieve the
password or find a way to set a new one so we can reinstall the necessary
programs to get some work done, as we cannot install anything without the
administrator password.
I am not the smartest nor am I the most ignorant computer user in the
world but this is way beyond me. If anyone has anything they know that will
help out my situation and can explain it in very simple details I would be
extremely appreciative.
Thanks in advance
Chris

For the computers password, unplug computer, remove battery for .30 seconds
to .45 or so,replace battery, start computer. You'll need to reset BIOS
date/time
etc on start up,+ adjust for add-ins.That usually does it,otherwise, when
battery
is removed, move boards CMOS pin from 1-2 to 2-3 position for the time, then
back to 1-2,replace battery. As for windows, sometimes simply pressing the
enter key will work (default) unless a specific password was entered...

Right advice, somewhat, for an administrator password guarding
access to bios configuration for a specific brand of motherboard
but hardly for Windows XP.

To Christopher: As a system administrator, one of the niftiest
tools to have around is created after visiting this site:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Go make your's. HTH & GL.

Are you asking for retrieve the Windows's Administrator Password? Confusing,
as "Andrew" is telling the method of reseting the BIOS password. Do computer
ask you for an administrator password while installing and removing password.
If yes, that means your account is set to "Limited" access. You must have
atleast one administrator password. To check information on how many
administrator and other users accounts are there:

* Click Start - Run - type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2

In the users list, note down that how many administrators accounts are
there. Minimum there should be 2 of them. The first inbuilt is
"Administrator" and the second one that is created by someone. Here should
also be a user name that you are currently using. See its group type. If it
is "Users" or "Guest" then you must know the password of atleast one
administrator.

Otherwise, search www.google.com for recovering lost administrator password.

Let us know!

After you have resolved the problem with the suggestions made
by the other respondents, think a moment about how you wish to
manage your show. If you were in charge of a fleet of cars, would
you have just one set of keys for each car and get embarrassed
when a manager leaves under a cloud and takes his keys with
hime? Probably not! Now how about applying the same principle
to your PCs? Creating and locking away a second admin account
for each PC takes next to no time at all but makes it very easy to
trade out of this type of problem.

Good advice, but it may not be that simple. An admin can
change other admins' passwords. In your fleet of cars
analogy, it would be the same as changing the locksets.

If you're still stuck check out this webpage:

http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

I personally use the 2nd option listed in the free tools.

It will walk you though creating bootable CD, that will reset the
administers password. Having used this a few times, when resetting the
password I would recommend setting it to nothing, then booting into Windows
and changing it to something else there.

And Pegasus... Your analogy is seriously flawed. Any admin can change other
admin's password or delete the account all together.
