I open various progs without any probs, but my computer makes strenuous
grinding noises when I try and open Excel files. I get in okay, and can
work and save okay, but the opening noise sounds very strained. (In fact it
has just made the same noise when I went to "Tools" to check available disc
space - anyway, 3.4 GB left, which seems okay.)
Any help would be much appreciated. Best wishes, Canna

A grinding noise coming from the hard drive(from inside the computer) may
indicate a failing drive. I'd backup your personal data as soon as possible
and have the drive looked at.

Hi,

Time to make a back up of all personal data and replace that hard drive.
When a hard drive starts to make a noise, especially a grinding one or
clicking noises, it means the drive is going bad and will fail soon or will
start to get corrupted sectors ruining your data.

Probably it is looking at your floppy drive, maybe your last session used
the drive.

I'm with Frank on this one. Look in "File" and recently used file name
list for one that was on the A: drive.

Good morning folk,

Thank you very much for your ideas. Have had a BIG computer prob. since
posting my question (unrelated to it), so could not get back sooner.

Would like to know more about my computer making a grinding noise when
looking for a floppy disk that has been removed. I think this may well have
been the problem. Is there any way to stop it happening again in the future
when I use a floppy? It would be good to know what is going on.
