Hearing mystery sound, can't find it

Hi! :-)

I keep hearing this strange faint (compared with volume seting) sound on my
comp that sounds something like a door latching and is followed two seconds
later by a similar fainter sound.

I deleted every mp3, ogg, mid, ra, wmv and wav on my comp except for my mp3
music collection, some game sounds that I know aren't the source of the sound
and a few wav's in .cab files that I also know aren't the source.

What can I do to trace where the sound is coming from and eliminate it?

What exactly are you doing with the computer when you hear that sound?

Might the sound be comming from an "Instant Messenger" program when people on
you IM list log on/log off?

Do you have some sort of instant messenger program running?

It varies. I can be doing anything. The only time I don't hear it is when
I have the TV, radio or Winamp on and that's just 'cuz it's drowned out.

Nope. I have Yahoo Messenger, but it's rarely turned on (open at startup is
disabled) and it's been ruled out as the source

Open the sounds applet in control panel and check all the sounds to find out
which one it is.

Just tried that, all the sounds came up as something to the effect of "file
not found" because of the deleting I earlier mentioned, set "sound scheme" to
"no sounds" and the mystery sound still happens.

Do a search for all the .wav files on the system and play them to find it.

Thanx, but did that already and the sound still happens.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I've got a curious sound problem too. When
using the mouse wheel to scroll up and down the page in files or web pages I
get a strange sound through my speakers - it's like a squeak with a bit of
echo!

My mouse is USB optical via adpator to PS2.

I've not tried plugging directly into a USB port yet, would it make any
difference?

Thanks in advance.

If you're sorry to hijack the thread, then don't. :-) It's best to create a
new post.

Any ideas on how to find all of 'em since apparently, start/search/for files
or folders isn't finding all of 'em?

Mabey it's a quirk of the mouse you have? My first USB mouse had a nasty
habit of suddenly not working until I unplugged it for a few seconds (the
reason I replaced it) and the one I have now sometimes causes what I'm
looking at (any program) to suddenly scroll down as if I turned the wheel one
click when I hadn't touched it.
