have a generic soft56k data fax voice speakerphone modem.
when dialing-up I hear the modem trnsmitting across the
speakers. This is only until connected. Any way to turn
off the connection between the modem and speakers during
dial-up?

Something to try...
Control Panel|PHONE AND MODEM|MODEMS tab|PROPERTIES|ADVANCED
In the Extra Settings box, type M0 (that's a zero, not the letter o)
Click on OK to exit the dialog

If you want to stop the modem squawk entirely, turn off the speakers
in Control Panel \ phone and modems \ modems tab
Properties for your modem
Modem tab, speaker off.

If sound is still on, go to the advanced tab (also in modem
properties), enter M0 in the extra commands box. That's zero, not the
letter O. Apply\Okay your way out.

The only way to get around you problem is to disconnect the cable from the
soundboard the modem. In the old days modems had a speaker built on the
modem. They are saving that one and hook the modem to the sound card or mb
sound section
