He;p fix Unfound Device error when using the MMC Computer Magement to open hard disks

My system has developed an irritating error when using the MMC Computer
Management\Disk Management:
All the tools work EXCEPT that if I click open on any disk I get a loud
bleep and the following error message:
"C:\
The system cannot find the device specified
OK

"

The drive letter will be that of the disk I am attempting to open and after
the message the disk opens in Explorer view.
All devices present in Device Manager are working correctly.
I have hunted high and low to find the source of this error without
success.
can anyone help?
