F1 | Help | Shared Folders

Using Shared FoldersYou might need to have a computer administrator account
to perform some tasks.

Shared Folders displays the following three categories:

Shares: Shared folders on your computer.
Sessions: Users connected to your computer.
Open Files: Files on your computer currently opened by other users.
Using Shared Folders, you can create, view, and set permissions for shared
files and folders.

To open Shared Folders
Open Computer Management (Local).
In the console tree, click Shared Folders.
Notes

To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then
double-click Computer Management.
For information about using Shared Folders, in Computer Management, click
Help on the Action menu.
For more information, click Related Topics.

XP does not use passwords to protect resources. It uses permissions
instead. Here is information to help you with that:

How to disable Simple Sharing and set permissions on a shared folder in
Windows XP (Pro only)
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307874

HOW TO: Set, View, Change, or Remove File and Folder Permissions in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308418

Passwording of folders is not supported unless you zip them. When you do
(right click a folder, then "send to --> compressed folder") and then
open the zip file, you will find an option under file/"add a password".
Otherwise, use third-party software. Google "password protect folders".

Passwording of compressed folders may be disabled if you install WinZip
(maybe other zipper apps as well).

Good point, but then they can use WinZip's passwording capability
instead of XP's.
