Does the latest version of XP Home actually keep the hard drive optimized
automatically, eliminating the need for programs like Systemworks?

I always liked Systemworks because their Speedisk program had a full page
progress chart instead of just an idiot light, but they've doubled the
price of it in recent years and pissed me off by shutting it down on my
computer, just because I bought the legitimate copy on Ebay instead of
from a retail store.

If windows could keep itself
optimized automatically, then
you would not need the user tools
like chkdsk, defrag, etc...

the market place provides many
handy dandy tools that are
freewares and available from
download.com and others.

for the ones included in windows,
you can run and open the cmd window
and type help....

Norton Systemworks is junk. (I'm being kind.)

Start|run|cmd|type:

chkdsk c: /f/v

defrag c: -v

Substitute another drive letter if required.

Do this once a month.

You don't need systemworks any of the Norton home products. XP has all the
tools you need to keep it running well. Open My Computer, right click on
the hard drive, choose properties. From there you can do disk clean up. On
the tools tab you have access to the defragmenter. XP's built in
defragmenter works fine for most purposes.

yours isn't "slow", it has some good tips for maintenance.
