Yesterday my home pc refused to boot. When I turn it on it tells me it is
starting to boot
but does not go any further.I have not loaded any new software recently or
made any other changes.
I tried the HD in another pc and I can access all files theirin.I had a
small spare drive that I installed as
the master and have now reloaded the OS on this drive. The original drive is
set as a slave but
when I tried to create shortcuts for word and excel-they will not open.

Any ideas.

Hi Larry,

They (word, excel, and any other applications) would have to be installed in
the new Windows installation in order to run.

How far did the boot get in the other drive? It obviously is not a failed
hard drive, or you wouldn't be getting anything from it. Chances are, you
have either a corrupted boot sector, or a corrupted registry. "Which" can be
determined by the error message. Had you tried Safe mode?

When it boots there is progress bar on the screen and it get about halfway
and then stops.Will
not start in safe mode.Living in the wilds like I do means not too many
experts around and the few pc shops are really only interested in selling
new hardware.

Hi Larry,

Follow the steps here to recover from a corrupted registry:
