I had my HD not passing SCNDSK on the XP's DOS like Screen. stops at 50%. Can
not re-install XP since says DISk Damaged. Aftr Severl tries, Manged to fix
and now can see C: contents (but obviosly damaged file and Directory pointing
to lost file). Can not start SAFE mode because so many system files missing.
However access to C: and DIR commands gives some hope to salvage files. It
has UNIX like file attibute d-------- for directory. But can not do CD to
this dirctory and getting ACCESS DENIED, though I am logged onto as
ADMINISTRATOR in the begining and selected the windows instance to logon to.
What I do not get is to get pass ACCESS DEINIED message to copy contents to
some safer place.

Any idea? Will appreciate help

Take Ownership....

How to Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP

How to disable simplified sharing & set permissions
on a shared folder in Windows XP

A google search for the exact "error" message and the operating system in
question would have returned... many many hits.

When reading the articles - don't just 'skip' to the numbered checklist
part - read the entire thing or you might miss something important to your
particular situation.

One way to get at files when the XP installation is corrupted is to boot
into a different operating system.

I have had good luck with KNOPPIX, a free LINUX distirbution that runs
directly from CD (or DVD).

KNOPPIX can read XP-foramtted partitions, both FAT32 and NTFS. It can copy
files, or whole directory trees to external USB and/or firewire disks. In
fact, I recall that the latest version even comes with its own CD-writing
software. While KNOPPIX supports a command line, it also has a graphical
file manager, very similar to Windows Explorer.

If you chose to use the command line, remember that LINUX is more like UNIX
than like DOS: COPY is "cp" (lower case). XCOPY is "cp -r". CD is "cd".
DIR is "ls -l". For help type "man command_name" at a LINUX prompt.

Be default, KNOPPIX will not write to your hard drive. You can change that,
but it sounds like you want to get data off of the drive, not add to it.

Link to KNOPPIX: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

KNOPPIX is a big download from 700 Meg for the CD image to 2.2+Gig for the
DVD image. Use a high-speed connection on any computer.

Note that the KNOPPIX file is of ISO format, meaning that it must be burned
to CD (or DVD) using a program with the ability to burn-from-image. Nero
and Easy CD Creator can both do this. XP itself can not. The resulting
CD/DVD will work on almost any PC capable of running win98 or higher, and
might even work on some older machines.

As for permissions, KNOPPIX ignore the XP permissions; it will simply copy
whatever you ask it to copy. However, KNOPPIX will not produce readable
files, if the files are encrypted using XP's encryption scheme.

Thanks Shenan, The articles assume I have GUI, but I have SAFEMODE DOS like
Prompt... I am thinking of using DOS 6.22 (my find diskettes) but not I guess
will not read NTFS partition, so Bob's idea of another OS look promissing.
Will try and let u know...Thanks

Might make a BartPE Ultimate Boot CD instead.
Would be like booting into Windows XP off CD to access your files.
