Having problems logging into machine when not on the network

We have a few laptops that will not validate a user name
when not connected to the network. Once a user
successfully logs onto the network it works fine in the
fute whether or not it is connected to othe network.

Are they trying to logon to the network or locally when not plugged into the
network? Because if they are part of a domain they will want to
authenticate to the domain. Because if you click on the options button on
the login you have the drop down choice of either the domain or locally.
I'd also look to see if they have mapped drives. Because again the laptop
will try and reconnect to those drives and printers even if it is not
plugged into the network.

The machine is not connected to the network and I am
choosing to login to the domain. Normally this works but
obviously we don't have access to the network.
Interestingly, if we logon while connected to the network
with a particular user name and try again, not connected
it works fine

I assume you are trying to login to a machine that is
connected to a Domain?

If yes, then you should know that Windows NT, and XP needs
to login to the Domain the first time, in order to CACHE
the Domain permission to login. Afterwards, it normally
just needs the password. Usually, you can login locally by
choosing the local username at the login screen. I don't
recall the exact mouse clicks, but look for a local login
when you get to the login window.

Hope this helps you. By the way, there is usually no way
to do this over a dialup, or remote login, you usually
have to be hardwared to the lan that connects to the
domain controller.

Additionally, if it is user name that hasn't ever logged
into that machine it will not let them when the first time
the machine is not on the network.
