Have to reinstall windows

just got a larger H-D and want to put Windows XP pro on it is there anything
i should do before i Do install windows on it
 
I have it on a 40gb but want to put it on an 80gb both are already setup for
NTFS. If my copy is an OEM will i have any problems

If you don't have an SP2 CD download SP2 now so you can install it before
connecting to the internet - especially if you don't have the protection of
a router between you and the broadband modem. As soon as up and running go
to windows update and install all criticals.

Will you be keeping the old hard disk and swapping it to the slave drive or
why not consider just throwing the new one in there as well and leave the
system as it is?

(Unless it's a laptop of course in which case there might not be much room
:)

Older drives are sometimes slower and there are two IDE connectors usually
so if you want to go all new install but keep old drive as well I suggest
put older drive and CD on one connector and new (hopefully faster) drive on
it's own as master on the first IDE connector using the cable that came with
the drive... this should turn out to give you best speed but by all means
see what others think.

This can seem confusing, ask if in doubt, just trying to get the best deal
for you.

Why do you want to reinstall? The new drive should come with a copy
utility to allow you to copy the old drive to the new. If it didn't
come with the software, then go to the drive manufacturer's web site and
download their utility. Follow the instructions exactly.

Once the drive is copied remove the old hard drive, install the new one
as Master on the Primary IDE channel, remove all other peripherals such
as zip drives etc so the only thing attached is the drive, CD, floppy if
you have it, mouse and keyboard. After that initial boot with the new
drive you can attach the other peripherals and install the old drive as
a slave drive. Erase the XP installation files and program files on it
and use it for storage of data files.
 
need to reinstall because my kids computer only has a 13gb h-d and it is full
so they need a new one as my daughter won't let me format it i'm going to use
my 40 copy to her 13 then use that one for their back up

If I understand what you're saying, then you don't need to reinstall,
just do the copy from the smaller drive to the newer. Go to the 40 gb
drive manufacturer's web site and get there copy utility. Install the
40 as a slave in your daughter's computer, delete all the data from it,
then do the copy following the directions. Then do what I posted
previously about booting up only with the 40 as the master.
