Have recent XP security updates affected workgroup access for WIN9

I have three XP Pro computers and one WIN98 machine in the same workgroup.
The WIN98 machine "sees" the XP boxes in its workgroup, but the reverse is
not true. I've read all the postings on this topic and none of the
suggestions have solved the problem. My current idea is that one or more of
the recent critical and security updates is preventing the WIN98 machine from
exposing itself to the XP boxes. Has anyone else experienced a problem of
this sort?

For the record, the XP Pro machines have ICF turned off, NetBEUI is
installed and is the only protocol bound to file and print sharing, simple
file sharing is enabled, the Guest account is enabled on the XP hosts and
installed as a user on the WIN98 machine. Becoming a browse master is
disabled on the WIN98 computer (although the service is running on the XP
machines). All machines can ping each other. The XP machine Network Places
will not let me add the WIN98 shared folder as a location. Both the XP and
WIN98 machines have all the latest critical and security updates installed
(but not SP2.)

Thanks in advance for any input.

I don't think that XP security fixes are causing the problem.

Some other things that you mention that I don't think are involved:

1. Firewalls -- have no effect on NetBEUI.
2. Guest account -- isn't relevant in accessing WIN98.
3. Pinging -- uses TCP/IP, not NetBEUI.
4. Simple file sharing -- isn't relevant in accessing WIN98.

Make sure that:

1. File and Printer Sharing is installed on WIN98.

2. File and Printer Sharing is bound to NetBEUI and un-bound from
TCP/IP on all computers.

2. Client for Microsoft Networks is bound to NetBEUI and un-bound from
TCP/IP on all computers.

3. NetBEUI is installed exactly as shown here:

What happens if you try to access WIN98 by typing its computer name in
the Start | Run box in XP in this format?

\\computer

What exactly happens when you try to add the WIN98 shared folder to My
Network Places? What does the error message say?

Steve:

You're a champ in my book for taking a swing at this problem. It's been
driving me nuts. I followed through on all your suggestions and I can now
see myself and the WIN98 computer as members of the workgroup. Yay!!
However, the other XP Pro computers have disappeared from the group and none
of my shortcuts to them in Network Places work anymore. The error message is
"the network path is not found." Right now I'm doggedly going through all
the configuration and setup options on all three XP Pro machines to find out
what's different. Also, I now notice a teeny padlock in the upper right
corner of the icon representing the LAN in the Network Connections window.
Does that indicate anything in particular? Thanks again.

You're welcome, WebFoot. The padlock means that XP's Internet
Connection Firewall is enabled on the LAN connection, which will block
file and printer sharing. To disable it:

1. Right-click the LAN connection.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Un-check the Internet Connection Firewall box.

It might be helpful to right-click and delete the shortcuts in My
Network Places, which XP will automatically re-create. You can also
click "Add a network place" to re-create a shortcut manually.
