I have a intel PIII 550/ASUS MB I want to upgrade. This
box has XP Pro and several applications installed on the
hard drive. I have a new box that is a AMD 2600+/Abit and
I would like to try to put the harddrive into this new
box and at worst have to do an in-place upgrade while
retaining all the data, programs, etc. Of course I will
back up the harddrive as well as ghosting it before
attempting this feat. What are my chances of success? Any
better ideas on doing this upgrade with the least amount
of pain? Are there any activation problems I will run
into?

Thanks in advance for any info and advice.

Ron,

your chances of success are quite good. The procedure you
describe is the correct one.

There is only a residual risk of something unexpected going
wrong, but backups make this bearable.
