I just upgraded my daughters CPU and learned that Microsoft XP has a real
nifty "feature" that requires me to re-install XP because of this upgrade.

Am I doomed? Did I lose all my saved emails and am I also forced to
re-install everything!?!?

Please respond via this forum...thanks in advance for the help!

Patrick, replacing or upgrading a CPU in no way forces you to reinstall
WinXP. You may just have to reactivate WinXP
but even that is very doubtful.

Hi Patrick,

Run a Repair Installation, at most you have need to re-activate via the net.
Good luck!

Repair the Windows XP Installation - Note: You will forfeit all MS Updates.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. For more information
about how to do this, please refer to your computer's documentation or
contact your computer manufacturer.

Insert your Windows XP compact disc (CD) into your CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM
drive, and then restart your computer.

(You can also boot with a Windows 98/Me Startup disk with CD support and run
WINNT.EXE in the I386 folder on the CD)

When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message is displayed on your
screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

When you see the following message displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen,
press ENTER: To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is
displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is
selected in the box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP. Follow
the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

All should be well from there. Good luck!

You are most welcome, Michael. When they add another day to the week, I
will get a chance to add your links. :o) Hope that comes soon.

On a side note, with Halo 2 coming out, my home has become a revolving door.
Thus leaving my time limited.

I was told I have a 14 year old son, my wife even showed me a picture of
him, but havn't seen him downstairs for 2 weeks. I dont smell anything
bad so I guess all is OK.

LOL such is life as we know it. God or anyone else knows we can't control
it. At least you know where to look for the alleged son.

Not true. Exactly what did you upgrade?

You may need to do a repair installation (which is far from a
real reinstallation) and you may need to reactivate, but a
complete reinstallation is hardly ever necessary.

I upgraded the CPU and Motherboard. It is now too late for this computer as
I the only way I could move forward was to do a complete reinstall of XP.

Now, I moved my OLD mb and cpu to my daughters computer and have the same
problem again. I have yet to reinstall XP on her machine hoping there was a
solution better than what I already did...i.e. erase the registry through a
new install and have to re-install everything.

Also, on computer #1 (the one I did a windows reinstall on) did I lose all
my saved Outlook Express emails? Would they still be hidden somewhere? I
use this computer for work and would really like to be able to retrieve
them.

Thanks!

True that it's now too late. Not true that it was the only way
you could move forward.

As I said, do a repair installation. See "How to Perform a
Windows XP Repair Install"

Sorry, no. If you did a clean reinstallation, everything that
used to be on the drive is gone.

<LOL-LOL> Too funny and I hear you! Thanks, Ed. I needed that. :o)))

Just had my 14 year old (Kade) read this. They heard me laughing over the
H2 headsets (don't know how, but they did).
