What does Hardware Configuration Restart means? If that happens, do I have
to do a clean OS installation? How can I restart my hardware configuration?

Hi,

When is it happening and what is the exact text of the error message?

Well, the problem is that Windows XP is putting the wrong names for certain
hardware, like the recovery disk, has a SD Media Card Icon, the cd-rom drive,
has the Compact Flash/II. Also, it is recognizing for a Floppy drive, when I
dont have one.

Hi,

Open Device Manager, remove (uninstall) the misnamed bits and then reboot.
They should be redetected/reinstalled.

I TRIED that, and the hardware gets installed, and the same error happens.
The hardware gets recognized, and the wrong names appear, and the icons.
Also, it is still recognizing the floppy no matter what.

Hi,

What does the BIOS state about the floppy port?
Any particular events precede this problem you can think of?

I have checked on the bios, and the only floppy disk recurrence is for USB
Floppy Disk Emulation. And I still have the wrong icons, and hardware names,
and the bothering floppy on my device manager. Do you think that a Hardware
Restart will fix this problem?????

Hi,

When precisely are you getting the message about a hardware restart (there
is none such in a normal system, it may be something from the manufacturer
of your system).

I am not getting any message about having to do a hardware restart. I just
want to know why my XP is putting the wrong names on some hardware, and the
wrong icons, and why is it detecting a floppy drive when I don't have one.
That is all, and I believe that a Hardware restart may help

Well, your first question was "What does Hardware Configuration Restart
means?", which implies that you were getting a message regarding it.
Hardware isn't restarted per se, it is removed and reinstalled. We've
already done that and it hasn't solved the problem. The problem may lie in
the registry under this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum, you may want to look under
the appropriate keys and remove errant entries (but export a copy of the key
first). If you want, you can export a copy of that key and send it to me at
the address used here, just use the subject line of "per req".

I am sorry if I was unclear about the Hardware Restart. What I meant by that
is that is there any easy way to uninstall all the hardware, Restart XP, and
when it comes up, to detect the whole system to see if those wrong icons,
hardware names, and the "floppy appearance" would go awa. For the key entry
you gave me, I dont see anything about a floppy, and I don't have the
knowledge to browse through the Registry and change errand entries.

Hi,

For the floppy, look under enum\fdc (floppy disk controller). As to the
rest, as I stated, you can send me a copy of the key.

Hi,

To do this, start/run regedit, expand the branches to the enum key mentioned
previously. Click on the key, then on file/export. Give it any name, then
save to the desktop. Then send it to me as an attachment to the email
address used here using the subject line "per req".

While I realize that you are using the bulky web interface, the address
should still be plainly visible to you ([email protected]). You might want to
resend it as I do not see it (and I checked the filters in case you forgot
the right subject line - per req) this morning.
