hardware conflict during setup

Hi all - I hope someone can help me. I have a computer that has Win98 on
it. I try to run XP Home setup, and during the test for system
compatibility, it reports that there is a hardware conflict between the
video card and the main board, and it refuses to install. I downloaded the
latest video card drivers and tried again, same results. In Win98, the
device manager doesn't report any conflicts. Obviously they can't be
totally incompatible because they have been working together fine with
Win98. Why would XP report an incompatibility between the two devices, and
what can I do about it?

Thanks in advance,
Sheryl

I don't have the report in front of me, but it gives no helpful information
at all.

If I remember right, it uses the term "blocking conflict". It simply states
that setup has detected a conflict between the video card and the main
board, and Windows may not be able to start after setup. The conflict must
be resolved before setup can continue. Contact your hardware
manufacturer(s).

That's all the information it gives. No error numbers, no specifics,
nothing. Of course the report also gives "warnings" about other drivers and
software that may not be compatible with XP, but these are not "blocking"
problems, just warnings.

This was a custom built computer, and I contacted the guy who built it, but
he didn't have any idea why. Again Device Manager in Win 98 doesn't report
any conflict, and they are currently working together in Win98...

Thanks so much for the replies... I'm pretty sure I checked the Display
Adapter properties before, but I'll check again when I get home. The video
card is listed in the HCL, but not the motherboard...is that likely the
problem? The motherboard just isn't compatible for whatever reason?

Food for Thought - what you consider "no helpful information at all"
can be a bundle of information to those who recognize it.
