It sounds like that drive is not working properly in your system. You need
to be able to format it. If you can't get past that then something is wrong.
The first thing I would check is if all the jumpers are correct on the hard
drives. If this is a newer computer and you are using the newer thin wire 80
wire ribbon cables I would set the jumpers on all drives to use cable select
and make sure that the original drive is at the end (master) position of the
ribbon cable connected to the first IDE channel (IDE0 or IDE1 depending on
whether they label them 0 and 1 or 1 and 2). To ensure more reliable burns a
CD/DVD writer should be at the end (master) position. It is also not ideal
to mix optical drives and hard drives. That kind of leaves you with with the
slave position of the channel 1 for the second drive. I have to say that I
violated those suggestions and don't seem to have problems. I like to make
hard drives masters where possible and I let the DVD burner be the slave on
the second channel. It might depend on your individual components.
If you are still using thicker wire 40 wire cables then you will have to set
the master and slave jumpers. Try to make the hard drives masters and the
CD(s) slaves. You can only have one of each on each cable.
Here is one reference site that looked good using google:

For background info:

In summary don't proceed until you can format that drive in your own system.
Among other things to check are that DMA is enabled in the BIOS and in
Device Manager on each channel of the IDE ATA/ATAPI controller.

Re my last post.
I use a firewire port to download film from my sony trv33 camcorder using
the dv-avi format so after editing i can return it to the camcorder for the
best possible quality.
When i download to movie maker i sent the film to "my videos" a new folder
i made up in the new hardrive,i have to change the film destination to my
new drive as opposed to the old one .
The film downloads but is distorted both picture and sound.
If i download and choose the old drive as the destination for the film to end up it is fine.
For your information this new drive is a western 160g which i was not able
to format on my computer using windows xp home edition as i kept getting an
error message saying format was not successfully completed.I therfore
removed the hdd and a friend formatted it on his computer using windows xp
pro edition, dont know if this makes any difference.
