When I log out or turn off my computer, windows saves my registry while an
application or service was still using the registry during log off. The
memory is not freed and takes up harddrive space. How do I find out what is
still using the registry so that I can free the memory?

You are confusing Memory (Ram) with Pagefile ( Virtual Memory ) which is
hard drive space. If you want to check which
program is writing to the pagefile on shutdown rt click on
Taskbar>select Task Manager>Applications. See whats running
and chose end task for each one until you find the culprit.

Memory is erased as soon as you turn off the computer, so there's no need to
do anything to "free the memory."

The registry should be saved to the hard drive. You don't want that erased.

Are you having some sort of problem with the computer, or is this just a
curiosity?
