i recently installed an old hard drive in my brothers pc,
it has been formatted and partitioned but now the pc
locks up when loading windows. if i remove the hard drive
and just use the single drive he has there now, it works
fine, but when i add the second drive, on the secondary
ide cable, the pc freezes. why is this?

Look at the jumpers on the back of the harddrives. The first one, the
one with Windows on it, must be set to Master. The second one needs to
be set to slave. Also, check in your BIOS to make sure that everything
is set up correctly. Just make sure not to add/remove the harddrive
while the computer is running ;)

sounds like you need to check your jumper settings on the
drives and after you add the other drive clear your cmos
so the system will refresh the bios configuration.
