I am experiencing the following problem on a frequent basis. My computer has
a floppy drive, 1 optical drive [DVD], and 2 hard drives. Each hard drive has
2 partitions. Lately when I try to open "My Computer" from the Start Menu,
the "My Computer" window opens but is blank. It takes several minutes to
finally populate the window with all my drives. Even then if I click on a
drive, it can take several minutes before I see all the folders in that
specific drive. So far, I have been able to resolve the problem by running
Error-check on each partition. Howver, this time consuming and doesnt seem to
resolve the actual problem as it keeps reoccurring. Any assistance would be
greatly appreciated.

Have you tried disconnecting your floppy and/or cdroms? I'd try
removing those first and see if the problem goes away. If no
improvement, try removing the second HDD. After that you'll have to
start being a bit more aggressive - reinstall or reimage to another hard
drive and see if that works better.

Try removing media from the DVD drive, power down and disconnect any
external USB or Firewire drive, remove any thumb drive, and not powering up
the printer prior to a cold boot. If its still the same, the hard drives
aren't playing nice with each other. If its highly improved, one or more of
the others you prevented the PC from utilizing are the culprit(s).

XP should be checking/inventoring all prior to finishing its stuff at boot.
If the ide led is still running, don't log in until its done.

And, if he moves HDDs, be sure jumper settings are correct. Also, are the
drives showing up correctly at POST? Are the drives on separate channels? If
not, try moving the drives to separate channels. I just had an issue that I
thought was my Promise 133tx controller, on which I had two HDs (master &
slave).

After playing around with my hardware config (including throwing a different
controller), I discovered that, although the drives had been configured just
as is (was) in this machine for quite some time, for some reason, they
stopped playing well together. I wound up placing each drive as a master on
separate channels on the controller. All is well now. Why did this occur? I
can't really say, nor do I have time to investigate. It is enough for me
that they are now operating correctly with no data loss. Good luck.
