Hard drive very slow

A couple of weeks after I installed SP2 I noticed my PC suddenly took a lot
longer to startup. So I used System Restore and restored it to the previous
day when it was running normally, but this made no difference.

Then I tried checking my hard disk for errors (none), defragging (was very
fragmented and would only partially defragment) and deleting my temp files.
All of this made no difference.

According to SiSoft Sandra and Ahead Nero my hard drive is only running at 3
megs per second! The last time I used Nero before the problem occured my hard
drive was running at 21 megs per second and I understand that even this is
not very fast. It's an 80 gig IDE ATAPI by the way.

Can anyone tell me what might have happened and how to reverse it? I'd
appreciate some knowledge on this. Thanks.

Darren

As far as I know, Norton is virtually an "insidious virus" in itself.
Completely uninstall it, clean out all references to it in the Registry,
unplug your internet connection, reboot & see if that cures your problems.
You can always reinstall it later, but personally (from experience), I
wouldn't put any Norton program on my machine.
