I shut down my computer (Windows XP Home SP1) a week ago,
and when I restarted it, I went into My Computer, and
where there are usually listed my CD drive, DVD drive,
floppy and Hard drive (C), my hard drive is no longer
listed. The only way for me to find it, is to run a
search. If anyone can help me solve this annoyance, it
would be much appreciated.

Not a good sign.
First, backup to CD or floppy all your critical data files.
Some sectors may have failed. Try running, from a cmd window, chkdsk c: /r
You will have to shut down/reboot to have it run.

Just to confirm - have you made any changes/additions to your pc since the
last time you shut it down?

If running chkdsk doesn't make any difference, you could try disconnecting
and reconnecting your power and data cables to the hard drive, including the
data connection to the motherboard.

If, the problem persists, you should look into replacing your current hard
drive. There are utilities that will enable you to copy your whole drive to
the new drive.
