I have a new, Athlon 64 based computer with fresh installation of windows
XP. Old computer also runs XP. I'm trying to transfer required data: I
though I should be able to simply unhook the D: drive off the old computer,
hook it up to the new one which will recognise it as a D: drive and I can
copy *.* onto the new C: drive.

Sadly, I've tried all sorts of things and though in some configurations the
BIOS sees the drive, XP never does.

How can I copy the files? Any viable solution is OK so long as it's not too
expensive.

NB the old computer has problems networking, I can't seem to be able to get
it to transfer large files, so that would appear to be out.

XP will need to have had the drive assigned a letter. Have you tried with
Disk Management to see if the hard drive is listed?
