I can constantly hear the hard drive on my computer making a whirring sound,
and I couldn't hear this before. Is this a bad sign? Also my computer is
very slow to start up. How can I find out if theres a specific program or for
example my virus protection software that is causing this?
Thanks

If the sound is new and sounds like a racing engine winding up as it starts,
then the bearings in the drive are probably beginning to freeze up. The
disk speed is probably suffering, especially at startup and may be the
reason for the slow boot too.
It's time to do a backup of all your data ASAP, including emails, etc..
I hope you already have backups in place in case it can't last that long.
Better yet, replace the drive ASAP and then copy all your data to it.
The drive might quit as you read this, or several weeks from now; it's
hard to say, but it may not be long if it's changed sound. Your time may be
limited.

If you know the manufacturer of your drive, go to their website and look for
a download of a diagnostic utility that can help determine if the drive is
faulty or not.
