My hard drive needs cleaning as I have seen a noticable
slown down in term of performance. I regularly clean out
the temporary files (I also defragment the hard drive
monthly). This has not helped a great deal. Is there
anything else I can be doing? Please respond.

You might be loading up too many programs in StartUp
utilizing system resources. Go to: Start/Run/type
MSCONFIG and click OK, click StartUp tab. Disable
everything except your anti-virus program, if Norton, it
will start with NAV, click Apply then OK to set and save
your settings. Reboot. You have a "lean, mean machine".

This is terrible advice. There is no such thing as "too many programs" in startup. Performance can be hurt by some background programs, but others have hardly any effect at all. What's significant is *which* programs they are, not just how many.

Nobody should do as you suggest, and just blindly get rid of background programs that way. Instead, you should look at each program, determine what it does for you and evealuate the worth of what it does against its cost in performance. Get rid of what you don't use, get rid of what is unimportant to you, get rid of what isn't worth the cost in performance. But don't willy-nilly get rid of *everything.*
