HARD DRIVE QUESTION

Somehow by trying to fix or isolate a virus using AVG my
OS became corrupted. I cannot access the Internet by cable
or dial up and my network doesn't recognize the computer
and it doesn't recognize the network either. I have no way
of backing up or moving my files to one of the other
computers. I've tried a direct series cable connection and
that doesn't work. I have also tried to copy the most
critical files on CD but the only drive on four computers
that recognizes the information is the drive that created
it? So if I copy everything on CD's and try to copy them
back onto the computer in question after it's back up and
running and it doesn't recognize the CD's I'm in the
crapper...........................

My question is "if I install a second hard drive what's
the chances of being able to move the files onto it then
removing it and trying to repair or reinstalling XP???"

or..............

Installing the new hard drive, doing a clean XP install
along with SP2 then putting in the old hard drive and
copying the files onto the new one?

The bottom line is I know I screwed up letting in the crap
that infected the computer but now need to fix it and I'm
pretty sure there is no "easy" fix?

Note: All of my system restore points are gone also!

Thanks for anything you can do for me,

Dennis

this will work:

this too and sounds better, just install a good antivirus on the new
installation
before you start recopying the data,
try www.avast.com home free edition its better than AVG and is still free
Installing the new hard drive, doing a clean XP install

copying the files onto the new one?

Thank you for your input and your time! Right now I plan
on doing the later.............New hard drive, install XP
and sp2 then install the old hard drive as the slave and
transfer only my files and no system files after I've
installed your recommendation on "www.avast.com home free
edition"!!! Thanks again for your time,
