Hard Drive Problems

Hi,

I have a similar problem to Maciek. I have 2 drives on my
system: a 40Gb drive which holds the o/s and a 20Gb drive
which holds the majority of my data.

I originally had ME as my o/s. I formatted the 40Gb drive
and installed XP-Pro on it with the NTFS file system. The
20Gb drive I left as it was (FAT32).

There were no problems during the installation of XP-Pro,
but now that it's installed, it identifies my 40Gb drive
as F: (even though this is my system drive) and the 20Gb
drive as C:

When I open the 20Gb drive, I can see all the files and
folders but when I try to open some of the folders I get
an error message:

C:\<foldername> is not accessible. The parameter is
incorrect

When I hold the mouse pointer over the folder, a tooltip
comes up saying: Folder is empty

I know it isn't, cos I can boot the machine with my ME
startup disk and view the contents of the folders in
their entirety.

I thought of using convert.exe to make the drive NTFS
also, but as this is a one-way process, I'm loathed to do
it as I don't wanna lose any of my data.

I would really appreciate it if someone has a solution to
this problem. Thanks in advance

Re-install XP Pro. This time when you install XP Pro, unhook the
20 GB drive and any Zip drives you may have attached to the system.
Do the installation. After XP Pro is installed, hook the 20 GB drive
back up and reboot.

The new install of XP Pro will now be on drive C and the 20 GB drive
will become whatever drive letters follow. Remember, primary
partitions will be assigned a drive letter before extended\logical
drives.

There are other ways to do it and if you would like to attempt one of
those ways go to the MSKB and read: Q223188 The article pertains to
Windows 2000 but it works just as well with XP. I have done it
successfully on several occasions.

Good luck and regards.

OK, now my system drive is C: and my data drive is F: but I still can't open some of the folders on my data drive. I get the same "parameter is incorrect" message!!! Any ideas ?

Many Thanks
