your HDD is noisy?

Even if idle? not likely if there was no activity or wasn't trying to
read/write to HD, there wouldn't be any noise.

maybe it's time to replace HDD?

are you positive it is the hard drive making noise? not a CPU or case fan?

have you looked inside your computer lately?

Or, as was the case with me, the noises coming out of the VGA heatsink
fan, which I was convinced were coming from the hard drive in my
laptop, until I moved my ear around the surface and realized that the
noises were in fact originating from an area other than where the HDD
was.

sounds like you really need to backup your stuff, if you got an ibm hard
drive then its defo you need to back up, unless you have already gone down
by now
